AL-WAQ’IAH (56)

The Event

Revealed at Mecca,Verses: 96 In the name of Allah, The Merciful, The All-merciful
  1. When the Event befalls __(1)
  2. none denying that it shall befall __(2)
  3. abasing, exalting;(3)
  4. when the earth shall be rocked,(4)
  5. and the mountains crumbled,(5)
  6. and become scattered dust,(6)
  7. and you will be three kinds.(7)
  8. So Those on the Right, what of Those on the right!(8)
  9. And Those on the Left, what of Those on the Left!(9)
  10. And the Outstrippers, yes, the Outstrippers __(10)
  11. those shall be the near-stationed,(11)
  12. in the gardens of bliss.(12)
  13. A multitude among the former,(13)
  14. a few among the later.(14)
  15. On jewelled couches,(15)
  16. reclining on them, facing each other.(16)
  17. Ever-abiding youths shall be going round them(17)
  18. with goblets and ewers and a cup from a spring __(18)
  19. no headache they get by it, nor intoxication __(19)
  20. and such fruits as they choose,(20)
  21. and such flesh of fowls as their hearts desire;(21)
  22. and wide-eyed maidens,(22)
  23. as the likeness of covered pearls __(23)
  24. a recompense for that they have been doing.(24)
  25. Therein they shall not hear any non-sense nor any cause of sin,(25)
  26. but the words, `Peace, Peace.'(26)
  27. And Those on the Right, what of Those on the Right __(27)
  28. they shall be amidst thornless lote-trees,(28)
  29. and clustered banana-trees,(29)
  30. spreading shade,(30)
  31. and gushing water,(31)
  32. and plentiful fruits __(32)
  33. neither failing nor forbidden __(33)
  34. and raised couches.(34)
  35. We have formed them perfect,(35)
  36. and made them virgins,(36)
  37. loving, of like age,(37)
  38. for Those on the Right __(38)
  39. a multitude among the former,(39)
  40. a multitude among the later.(40)
  41. And Those on the Left, what of Those on the Left;(41)
  42. they shall be amidst scorching winds and scalding waters,(42)
  43. and the shadow of black smoke __(43)
  44. neither cool nor refreshing.(44)
  45. Before that, they lived at ease,(45)
  46. and persisted in the Great Sin.(46)
  47. And they used to say, `is it that when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we be raised up,(47)
  48. and our ancient fathers?'(48)
  49. Say, `surely the former and the later folk(49)
  50. shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day.(50)
  51. Then, O you that have gone astray and cried lies!(51)
  52. you shall eat of a tree of cactus,(52)
  53. and fill your bellies with it;(53)
  54. and, on top of that, you shall drink boiling water,(54)
  55. and drink as drinks the thirsty camel.(55)
  56. This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Recompense.(56)
  57. We have created you, then why do you not confirm?(57)
  58. Have you considered that which you spill?(58)
  59. Do you create it, or are We the Creators?(59)
  60. We have decreed death between you, and We cannot be outstripped,(60)
  61. in that We change your likes, and make you to grow in a form you do not know.(61)
  62. And you have known the first form, then why do you not pay heed?(62)
  63. Have you considered that which you sow?(63)
  64. Do you cause it to grow, or are We the Growers?(64)
  65. If We will, We would make it broken bits, and you would remain bitterly jesting:(65)
  66. `We are debt-loaded;(66)
  67. no, we have been deprived!'(67)
  68. Have you considered the water you drink?(68)
  69. Did you send it down from the clouds, or are We the Senders?(69)
  70. If We will, We would make it bitter; then why do you not give thanks?(70)
  71. Have you considered the fire that you kindle?(71)
  72. Did you make its tree to grow, or are We the Growers?(72)
  73. We Ourselves have made it a reminder and a comfort for the desert-dwellers.(73)
  74. So extol the Name of thy Mighty Lord.(74)
  75. But no, I swear by the sites of the stars __(75)
  76. and that is indeed a mighty oath if you but knew__ (76)
  77. it is surely a Noble Reading (Qur'an),(77)
  78. in a Hidden Book,(78)
  79. which none but purified touch;(79)
  80. a sending down from the Lord of the world.(80)
  81. So will you hold such a discourse in disdain,(81)
  82. and make it your living to give lies to it?(82)
  83. But why, when the soul reaches the throat,(83)
  84. and you, at that time, are watching,(84)
  85. and We are nearer to him than you, though you do not see.(85)
  86. But why, if you are not in bondage,(86)
  87. you do not bring it back, if you are truthful?(87)
  88. Then, if he be of those that are Near-stationed,(88)
  89. there shall be comfort and fragrance and a garden of bliss.(89)
  90. And if he be of Those on the Right __(90)
  91. `peace be upon thee, O one of Those on the Right!'(91)
  92. And if he be of those that cried lies, and were astray,(92)
  93. there shall be a hospitality of boiling water(93)
  94. and the burning in Hell.(94)
  95. Surely this is the Truth of Certainty.(95)
  96. So extol the Name of thy Mighty Lord.(96)
